The Power of a Reset

In a creative rut?

You and I both. I do have ideas, don't get me wrong. I daydream about the topics I want to write, and imagine what I'd like to say in future podcast episodes. But, for some frustrating reason, I can't seem to do something about them.

I've learned how to build a simple blog in less than an hour, sync data between two different apps through Zapier, and generate as many color palettes as I'd like (thanks, Pinterest). But when it comes down to actually creating?

I feel a little rusty.

So I scrapped everything, went back to the platform that has always made it easy for me to write, set everything up in one weekend, and here I am, writing again.

This made me realize how powerful a reset can be. If something's not working anymore because you feel so much resistance, try changing things up with a reset.

How to awaken your creativity with a reset

A "reset" is a strategic change that disrupts your current state and encourages you to approach your creative work with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. The form of a reset will depend on one's needs, personality, and preferences. Below are some ways to get started:

  1. Break the current routine: This can involve stepping away from your usual work environment, taking a break from creative work entirely, or trying new approaches to your tasks.
  2. Clear your mind: This might involve meditation, brain dumping and writing everything that has been bothering you, spending time in nature, engaging in physical activity, or any other activity that helps you relax and declutter your thoughts.
  3. Shift your perspective: This can involve seeking out new experiences, learning about different cultures or art forms, or simply engaging in conversations with people from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Recharge your energy: This might involve prioritizing sleep, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and a sense of fulfillment.

Here are some examples of how individuals might implement a reset to awaken their creativity:

  • A writer might travel to a new location for a change of scenery and inspiration or try new ways of making art.
  • A musician might take a break from playing their instrument and focus on listening to new genres of music.
  • A painter might explore a new medium like watercolors after years of working with oil paints.
  • A designer might set aside creative work for a week to go on a hike and clear their head.

The key is pinpointing what's currently hindering your creativity and choose an approach that helps you break free from that pattern.

For example, I've been procrastinating on writing because I didn't want to search for the perfect photo and have to edit it every single time I post. When I think about writing, all I want to do is open my laptop, type what I'm thinking, and hit publish. Or else I'll spend more hours trying to pick a pretty filter over getting my words on paper.

So as part of my reset, I revisited my current content creation systems and simplified my blogging process. When I create a new post—all that I have to do is write—no thumbnail or complex customization needed!

It's such a small adjustment, but it made a big difference. I actually am excited to kickstart my daily writing habit again.

Benefits of a reset

A reset is not a silver bullet. Just like any skill, creativity needs to be nurtured and cultivated through consistent effort and exploration. Still, periodic resets can be a valuable tool in igniting one's passion again in their creative journey, helping us:

1. Clear mental clutter: Constant exposure to information and stimuli can clutter our minds, making it difficult to focus and access deep thinking or original ideas. A reset, like taking a break, changing routines, or simplifying your environment, can help clear this clutter and create space for fresh perspectives and creative thinking.

2. Refocus your energy: When stuck in unproductive patterns, our energy can be depleted, leaving us disengaged and uninspired. A reset allows us to step back, recharge, and refocus our energy on the creative task at hand with renewed enthusiasm and motivation.

3. Break mental blocks: Sometimes, we get stuck in rigid routines or negative thought patterns that hinder creativity. A reset can help break these mental blocks by introducing new stimuli, challenging assumptions, and encouraging us to approach things from a different angle.

4. Get a fresh start: When we start afresh, we are less likely to be influenced by past experiences or failures that might discourage creativity. This allows us to approach the creative process with an open mind and a sense of experimentation. Also, who doesn't love a clean slate?!

5. Spark curiosity and exploration: Stepping away from familiar and comfortable routines can spark curiosity and a desire to explore new avenues, helping us discover new sources of inspiration, learn new skills, and ultimately, awaken our wonder.
